The Rongai Route is one of the most scenic and quiet trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the northern side near the Kenya border. This route is famous for its beautiful wilderness, gradual ascent, and high summit success rate, making it a great choice for both beginner and experienced climbers.

Itinerary Breakdown

Day 1

ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA/MOSHI

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative from Wildlife Lovers Safaris will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

At the hotel you will enjoy comfortable accommodation, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and a relaxing atmosphere before your climb. In the evening, our team will conduct a pre-climb briefing and gear check to ensure you are fully prepared for your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 2

Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp

  • Elevation: 2,020m → 2,671m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

After breakfast, we drive to Nalemuru Gate, located on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration with park authorities, your climb begins through beautiful forest and gentle mountain trails.

You will arrive at Simba Camp, where our mountain crew will have already prepared your tents and dinner.

Day 3

Simba Camp to Kikilewa Camp

  • Elevation: 2,671m → 3,630m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Today’s trek continues through open moorland with fantastic views of the surrounding landscape. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes more sparse and the scenery more dramatic.

Upon arrival at Kikilewa Camp, you will rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next stage of the climb.

Day 4

Kikilewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

  • Elevation: 3,630m → 4,315m
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Today you trek to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the towering Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s second highest summit.

After lunch, you will take a short acclimatization hike to help your body adjust to the altitude before returning to camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut Camp

  • Elevation: 4,315m → 4,720m
  • Distance: 9 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

The trail gradually leads into an alpine desert landscape as you approach the base of Kilimanjaro’s main summit cone.

At Kibo Hut Camp, you will rest early and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 6

Summit Attempt to Uhuru Peak & Descent to Horombo Camp

  • Elevation: 4,720m → 5,895m → 3,720m
  • Distance: 21 km
  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

Around midnight, your summit adventure begins. Guided by headlamps and the support of your guides, you slowly ascend toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend back to Kibo Camp, rest briefly, then continue down to Horombo Camp for the night.

Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720m → 1,970m
  • Distance: 18 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

After breakfast, you descend through lush rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you will receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate.

A vehicle will then transfer you back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest and celebration.

Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight or continue with another safari adventure in Tanzania.
